EVEN with the SmartTAG system, cars have to be relatively close enough to the tag reader to be detected, but imagine if you can be as far as half a football field away.
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) researchers have developed a sensory device using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) that will allow automatic toll collection from a distance of up to 45m from the toll booth.
Research team head Dr Widad Ismail said the device was the first of its kind to be locally made and only cost half the price of imported versions.
''Most of our highways use Japanese products and they use point-to-point infrared technology which means you have to be at a specific point for the tag to be detected.
''With a RM2mil grant from the Science Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti), USM has developed a similar system using RFID. This provides circular coverage which means you can be detected anywhere within a 45m bubble around the tag,'' she told a press conference recently.
