AS part of the 2009 ADWAVE week, Omnicom Media Group (OMG) Malaysia managing director Andreas Vogiatzakis, representing the Media Specialist Association of Malaysia (MSA), conducted a recent workshop for the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students to raise their awareness on a media specialist’s job.

Vogiatzakis said: “The calibre of the students is unparalleled. These amazing young minds have put together a fantastic week-long programme to be envied by all of us professionals.

“Representing the MSA, I was fortunate to be part of this week’s learning, and share with the students our vision of where the media is going, and why it represents a promising and prosperous career opportunity.”

As in other MSA companies, OMG’s subsidiaries OMD and PHD had committed themselves to contributing to the media community and helping to elevate their industry’s values to the young minds and leaders of tomorrow, he said.

“I have already committed to at least another two internships this year for the brightest of USM students, leading to employment,” he added.

The media seminar included a session on the evolution of the media specialists as the drivers of growth in the advertising industry in the region and in Malaysia.

Its aim was to expose the students to several creative media executions and culminate in a session on the teaching of life — passion, commitment, determination and the road less travelled to success.

USM associate professor Mohamad Md Yusoff said: “It was a good presentation on media planning as a career. It also provided a good insight on advertising industry.

“I believe this tradition of MSA involvement should be continued annually and it should be part of the ADWAVE event.”

Wong Chor Jaur, a final-year USM student described the workshop as fantastic.

“Through a great presentation, I got to know more about media planning.

“It provided me a multitude of alternatives for my job prospects,” he said.

Priti, a second-year student, said: “I never knew the difference between media specialists and advertising agency.

“The mini workshop was an eye-opener for us. We actually got to know what a media planner, a media buyer and also a media specialist do.

“Furthermore, the mini workshop is a necessity as we are now more aware of the job scope and demand in the market. Definitely it was productive, informative and impactful.”

The AwarD Winning AdVertising Exhibition (ADWAVE) is an annual USM project that offers tertiary students an opportunity to showcase their creative talents. It is organised by the final year Persuasive Communication students from USM’s School of Communications.

ADWAVE 2009 also conducted a one-day workshop at the school’s Studio Penggambaran where 80 lucky participants had a chance to unwrap the wonders and promises of the ‘New Media.’

The workshop was facilitated by Vedastra Consulting Ltd managing director Prashun Dutt and Amphibia Digital Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Gary Tay. For details on the event, please log on to www.usm.my/adwave2009 or call 016-8439600/017-2572699.
