CHEONG Soog Keag may only be 21 but he is definitely a man with a big heart for the environment.
The second-year student of Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) School of Industrial Technology decided to give away the mountain bike he won as ‘public transport’ for his hostel mates after winning the USM Fuel Smart Driver Award in the student category.
“This way, they can cycle from the hostel to the university and within the vicinity without having to walk under the hot sun or ride a motorcycle.
“My contribution to the environment may not be enough but I believe a difference can be made if I involve my hostel mates,” said Cheong who also won RM200 and an alarm clock trophy.
On the secret of becoming a fuel smart driver, Cheong. who has a 100cc Honda Wave motorcycle, said he checks the tyre pressure frequently.
“I do not simply accelerate or make unnecessary emergency brakes,” he said, adding that he only spends RM12 to RM15 monthly on fuel.
Organised by the final-year students of USM’s School of Communication, the Fuel Smart Driving Campaign held from Jan 7 to Feb 26 advocated smart fuel-saving measures and promoted use of public transportation as a way to save fuel. - TheStar
